The Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic prologued today’s main events with a special throwing event at Rashpal Dhillon field facility at the University of British Columbia last night.
Janee’ Kassanavoid of the USA smashed the Jerome meet record in the women’s hammer with a world class throw of 75.37m breaking Germany’s Kathrin Klaas’s meet mark of 72.40m set 11 years ago. Janee’s best throw this spring was 78.00m at the USATF Throws Fest in Tucson which moved her to sixth on the world all-time list.
Janee’ may represent the highest world ranking for any indigenous North American in the sport of athletics. Janee’ is a member of the Comanche nation of the southern plains of the United States. She attended Kansas State University. She was 4th in the US Olympic Trials last summer and has he eyes set on the 2022 World Athletic Championships in Eugene this July and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
On the weekend at the NCAA championships, Camryn Rogers of Richmond , BC broke the Canadian record for her 3rd title with a throw of 77.67m .Camryn was 5th in the Olympic Games in Tokyo last summer and the gold medalist at the 2018 World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland. She is aiming at the World Championships set for Eugene’s new Hayward Field in mid July and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Camryn would have loved to compete at the Jerome Classic as Janee’ Kassanavoid of throw of 78.00m is ranked 3rd in the world while Camryn best is ranked 4th just 0.33m back.
Rowan Hamilton of Chilliwack and Adam Keenan of Victoria had a big battle in the men’s hammer with the recent NAIA winner edging the veteran thrower. Rowan prevailed over Adam with extremely close throws of 74.73m to 74.37m.
Veronica Fraley of the USA won the women’s discus with 57.21m while Jesse Zeseu of Ontario won the men's discus with 49.50m just over 3m short of the F38 world’s Paralympic record of 52.91m.
