The role of the 2022 Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic is to provide the opportunity for Canadian athletes to optimize their potential in the sport of athletics. Competition from over a dozen countiries will meet Tuesday, June 14th at the legendary Swangard Stadium hoping to improve their personal or seasonal bests. Some athletes will be aiming for the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon starting on July 15th and others for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK on July 28th or the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia on August 1st.
It will be a chance for fans to celebrate the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Champion in the decathlon, Damian Warner. Named the outstanding athlete in all sports in Canada for 2021, Damian will compete at the Jerome Classic in the 110m hurdles and the long jump.
Over two dozen Canadian track and field athletes have met the qualification standards required to enter the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon by the mid May period.
This group will have to compete at the National Championships in Langley, BC with few exceptions such as combined events and some distance events. Their positions could be challenged if more than 3 Canadian athletes meet the qualification standards.
Information suggests that some athletes who have qualified will not be active this season. This includes Genevieve Lalonde, Melissa Bishop-Nriagu and Georgia Ellenwood.

Seventeen other Canadians could be considered to be on the bubble and may secure selection by holding their world ranking position that falls within the maximum quota of athletes predetermined in each event. This quota number varies from as few as 16 entries in the relays to 100 in the marathon.
At this time in mid May, this is the list of Canadians who fall within these quotas based on their World Ranking (WR). Their rank can change by the day as other athletes in their event may move up or down based on new performances.
A safer strategy is to obtain the entry standard (ES) or improve their seasonal best (SB) and up their world ranking.

This is an incomplete list of course, as expected results may come from surprising athletes.

Gary Kingston, the Jerome media co-ordinator reported, “The Jerome, Canada’s longest running track and field event, will feature a full field of athletes and fans in the stands this year. The 2020 Jerome was canceled outright because of the Covid pandemic and the 2021 event was limited to just 71 athletes and no spectators inside the stadium. But that meet was still a resounding success with one Canadian record set, one Olympic standard reached, four meet records and 27 personal bests”
World Athletics, the international governing body lead by Olympic Champion, Seb Coe, has classified the Jerome as a World Athletics Continental Tour, Bronze Level. This designation of the Jerome Classic will provide the athletes with the opportunity to collect World Ranking points.
Tickets to the meet are now available online at www.harryjerome.com
